Today we learned about Volume and investigated this concept using manipulates. Our goal was for students to build a model from dimensions to prove volume. Eventually students learned that by multiplying the length, width, and height of the rectangular prism they found the volume.
Students used cm cubes to think about volume of an object.

Kindergarten book project
The 5th graders were surprised when I explained that we would be making books for Kindergarteners based on the informational essays that were just finished. Their first thought...this is going to be so simple. They couldn't have been more wrong. We investigated what Kindergarten books looked like and the intricacies of them. Fifth graders had to make many decisions based on their audience, such as: what kind of sentence pattern will I choose? which words and layout work best for my readers? and MUCH more. These were just some of the many decision, revisions, and editing my students worked through to make these authentic books. Of course, the best was sharing them with Mrs. Miller's class.

Planting day
Today students in Science planted over 40 seeds into their terrarium. Over the next 14 days, students will be observing, taking notes, and looking for any growth. In their science notebooks, students created a map in order to find their buried seeds and identify them once they emerge from the ground. Students decided on how to plant them and how much water to add to each garden. All of them had to justify how much water they used and why they placed the water in certain spots.
I will continue to post pictures of students' terrariums as they grow!
