Water Tolerance experiment
Students are learning about how water plays a vital role in the development of plants. Together we created a water tolerance experiment. The investigation surrounded the question: How does the amount of water affect plant growth? Students wrote their hypothesis into their notebooks and then began figuring out an experiment that would answer the question. Teams decided to plant 16 seeds (of 4 different varieties) into 1 quart containers. In each container they agreed on a certain amount of water (0 ml, 10 ml, 40 ml, and 80 ml). They decided to let the plants grow for 14 days and then to check to see which plants in which container grew the best. Students measured root length, stem length, number of leaves, and made a decision on which water amount yielded the best plants. Take a look at the scientists in action.

Stand4change
Stand4Change Day 2013
Today your child’s school took part in Defeat the Label’s annual Stand4Change Day. The purpose of this day is to raise the national visibility of bullying and provide a call to action for schools and students to take a stand against bullying. In taking this stand, they stood in solidarity with over 2.7 million students around the world signifying that bullying behavior will not be tolerated.
As part of the activities today, your child took an anti bullying pledge in the classroom. We also encourage you to visit www.defeatthelabel.com with them to review and take the pledge together in addition to learning more about how your child can get involved in Defeat the Label’s programming in schools and communities.
Finding Volume
The learning target for math today: If I know two dimensions and the total volume, I can figure out the missing volume. Students worked together to find the missing dimension by using manipulatives, drawing, and investigating different rectangular prisms.
